Give me a summer on Cape Cod, a clam bake, a nautical striped shirt and some Sperrys and I am one happy girl. There’s just something about the preppy pieces that I just love. Maybe it’s the fact that my Mom is from Boston or maybe it’s just my devotion to sailor stripes and blazers. This spring, preppy is totally on trend with bright, bold colors and subtle menswear influences. To keep the look fresh make sure your preppy has a modern twist with items like this updated navy blazer and metallic Sperry topsider. Plus, you have to love the Hermes inspired bracelets and what preppy collection would be complete without a little Lily Pulitzer?
Here are a few items worth adding to your spring wardrobe… and the best thing is everything’s under $100 so you get the lux, prep look without breaking the bank!
If I’m out shopping and I come across anything with stripes…chances are it’s coming home with me. I love the nautical inspiration and wearing a stripes makes me feel classic like Grace Kelly with a hint of Parisian chic.
If you don’t already have a striped top you’ll want to put one on your must have list for spring. As you can see from the collage above, striped tees are really versatile, complementing many different personal styles, and make outfits a little more visually interesting than just a plain t-shirt. I wear mine at least once a week and love styling it with everything from jeans to leather shorts to military jackets.
If you’re looking for an investment piece I’d go with Saint James but if you want a more budget friendly buy then everyone from Gap to H&M to uniqulo has a striped shirt for under 20 dollars. It a a great purchase you’ll wear from season to season that will add polish and sophistication to every outfit… and trust me pretty soon you’ll be a stripe enthusiast too:)
During a trip to Nordstroms this fall I made a fantastic discovery. I was in the market for wide leg jeans to add some variety to the skinnies and straight legs that I usually gravitate toward. I love wide legs and flares for the 70′s vibe, they’ are cool and effortlessly chic…however, I could not find a single pair that were flattering for my athletic legs. That was until I found MOTHER. This brand is the collaborative brainchild of designers from Citizen’s of Humanity and 7 Jeans and has the softest texture with tons of stretch which is super flattering if you have a more muscular lower body. Plus, the longer hem makes for endless legs when paired with a platform or wedge .
I love paring wide legs and flares with a silky, flowy top like this one from Banana Republic with some bold jewelry. It’s a go to for casual dinners with my husband or strolling through Pike Place Market on the weekend. Wide legs and flare jeans are super versatile (day to night, fall to summer) and really flattering so if you don’t already have a pair in your denim wardrobe I would definitely suggest adding them!
Banana Republic Bella Pintuck Blouse. BR is out online but I have seen plenty of this style in the store.
JCrew Greer Wedge Booties. Unfortunately these booties are no longer available but these platform sandals would be great for spring.
JCrew Brompton Hobo:I love love love this bag. It’s big so I have to be careful not to fill it with five pounds of lip gloss but it’s also a classic shape , super soft and comes with a shoulder strap so I take it everywhere.
Gold Bangle $40 Banana Republic. The one I’m wearing is actually from Forever 21 which is my go to go fun statement jewelry. I love it, they have bins with things that are all totally on trend and under five dollars!
The necklace I’m wearing is old and from JCrew (my other jewelry go to ) but I like this one from Asos for $26. It’s very cool and I’d totally wear it with my wide leg jeans and white tee and leather jacket. Hmmm… I think I have outfit for tomorrow picked out;)
Every morning when I wake up I can’t wait to check out what my favorite style bloggers from Cupcakes and Cashmere, Brooklyn Blonde and Sterling Style are wearing. Seeing these real girls put together amazing outfits not only gives me great ideas for what to wear but it also inspired me to have a little fun with Instagram and do an outfit post of my own.
After what has seemed like an eternity of rainy days here in Seattle (by the way, it’s totally true…it rains here A LOT!) I was inspired to put on the red trousers I bought at Madewell a few months ago and combat all the gray skies with some color. They are a wool gaberdine and beyond comfortable, easy to run around and do my errands in and surprisingly flattering given the front pleats. I paired them with one of my favorite crew neck animal print wool sweaters and put on a statement necklace with two big bracelets. I love big jewelry which might be because I share a birthday with late great Elizabeth Taylor;). Nude heels helped to keep the focus on the pants and lengthen my leg line. Yes, this look is a bold but I loved it and felt so great in my pop of color it helped make the gray days fade away.
If you want to tone the look down a little you could try a nautical striped shirt and ballet flats instead.
If you go with animal print make sure it’s a sophisticated print like the blouse in the Polyvore collage above.
I love big jewelry but not big price tags so I get most of my stuff from JCrew and Forever21. It’s amazing how some $10 statement jewels can make a simple jeans and t-shirt look super expensive;)
The bracelets and sweater in my pictures above are old and I don’t know if you can get them anymore but if you’re interested you can click on the Polyvore collage above for details on how to get a similar look.
My J Crew devotion began in middle school and has only continued to grow with time. I love getting their catalogs in the mail as they’re always filled with beautiful locations and fabulous outfit inspiration. Their pieces create that perfectly preppy east coast vibe but I also love to mix them with everything from leather pants to faux fur for edgier outfits.
I recently visited the store and the bright colored pre-spring line totally transported me away from the gray and rainy Seattle weather. I couldn’t help but imagine sporting the outfits in warmer temps and strolling through beachside towns on Cape Cod. Given it’s only January those warm days are a ways off but I’ve picked some of my favorite items that just might usher in an early spring:)
Schoolboy Blazer : Shrunken, nipped in at the waist and totally flattering, this is one of my favorite wardrobe staples. Wear it now with jeans and flat, knee high boots for a chic equestrian nod and paired with shorts and a silk tank in spring.
Stretch Colored Toothpick Jeans: Colored skinny jeans are a huge trend for spring. J Crew has several colors but I like these soft yellow ones…banana references aside:)
Sperry Top Sider Boat Shoe: The minute I saw these I knew I had to have them. What can I say, I have a weakness for anything nautically inspired. I like the pink but these Sperry’s come in many different colors and are a nice casual alternative to ballet flats.
Bubble Necklace: Jazz up everything from a plain white tee to a printed dress and the blue color is oh so flattering on many different skin tones.
Keeper Chambray Shirt: This will be one of the most versatile pieces in your closet. It is a go to for every super popular fashion blogger out there and will look great day or night with everything from white jeans to sequin skirts to leggings.
Pebble Dot Bermuda Shorts: I’d wear these with a navy and white striped shirt and nude wedges. Bermudas are not only a flattering length they also make for a polished way to wear shorts.
